Franz Kafka's novel The Metamorphosis thematises the alienation and isolation of the individual in modern society. The transformation of the protagonist Gregor Samsa into a vermin symbolises his increasing alienation from his family and his environment.

In The Metamorphosis, the apple that Gregor's father throws at him symbolises the final separation and rejection by his family. The apple seriously injures Gregor and leads to his slow death, which emphasises the destructive effect of the family's rejection.

The key, on the other hand, symbolises control and power. Gregor loses the ability to open doors and move freely, which emphasises his isolation and helplessness. The keys symbolise the barriers that are erected between him and the outside world.
