Frederick II of Hohenstaufen played an important role during the Fifth Crusade (1228-1229). Instead of military force, he favoured diplomatic negotiations and reached a peaceful agreement with Sultan al-Kamil. This agreement made it possible for Christians and Muslims to share the use of Jerusalem, a remarkable and rare peaceful solution in the history of the Crusades.

Frederick's approach exemplified that diplomacy and negotiation could be an alternative to war and conflict.
