Michelangelo's statue of David symbolises the biblical battle between the young shepherd David and the giant warrior Goliath, which stands as a metaphor for the victory of the small over the great and of good over evil. David’s slingshot represents the simple but effective weapon he uses against his overpowering opponent. The horrified face of Goliath that appears in the viewer's imagination illustrates the giant's fear and surprise at his imminent defeat.
The Medici coat of arms, which is often found near the statue, consists of six spheres on a golden background, five of which are red and the top one blue with three golden fleurs-de-lis. This coat of arms symbolises the power and influence of the Medici family, who supported and promoted Michelangelo's work.
